Foundation Composition Course: FW (English 101)

Some freshmen must take the English Composition Placement exam during freshman orientation. Students who must take the test receive notification of their status via email and/or from dorm counselors. After taking a placement examination during orientation week, some freshmen are placed in English 101, Expository Writing.  Freshman advisors give students results of the placement test in time for fall registration. Students placed in 101 should take it in the fall term. One-year visitors hoping to take English 101 must wait until freshmen here for the full 4 years have been accommodated. One-year visitors are encouraged to contact the professor teaching English 101 directly or to enroll in English 201 in the winter term.

Sufficient spaces in English 101 sections are usually offered each fall to guarantee each 4-year student a place in 101; however, scheduling conflicts do arise from time to time. When that occurs, the English Department endeavors to offer one section of 101 in the winter. In 2005-06, no winter section of 101 has been scheduled.

Students and advisors should not postpone English 101 for the winter or for the sophomore year.

Purpose of the Foundation Requirement FDR (FW):

Students will receive extensive practice in critical reading and writing; will be introduced to conventions governing appropriateness and persuasiveness in writing; learn the conventions of standard English; learn to choose words more precisely, to write clearer sentences and more effective paragraphs, to argue a workable thesis, to use an effective voice, and to integrate the work of others into their own work properly; and, overall, learn to increase precision, fluency, and confidence with written language.
